Thanks Ken.
I agree it does feel roomier.
Where I became confused is the dealer said 2001 was the fist WB year yet the specs I've read show a beam of 14'-1" pre and post '01.

I was unaware the change took place 10 years earlier.

I'll dig a little deeper now.
Thank you!

Just what is a 42 wide body?

I came across a 2001 42 Classic "Wide Body" yesterday and I really liked it. Mostly because it was one of those boats that just felt right and could easily be an extension of "me." Know what I mean? Anyway all the broker could tell me was that the wide body is 8 inches wider. Tha...

Thanks for the quick reply, Ray.
That's what I was thinking.
I see more 2000 and up with SS than teak it seems.

SS Rails

When did the GB 42Cl switch to SS railings?
Does '98 sound right?

Sidney BC surveyors & insurance

Moving to Sidney in June was step one of a two step master plan. Step two should be completed by next spring, subject to finding the right boat. Based on an '85 to '95 GB 42 with 120 Lehmans, I would appreciate input from local boaters on hull and mechanical surveyors as well as vessel insurance age...

Thanks Bob and Barry; there is just no end to the helpful, available advice here. Now, can I assume chain runs from the lower helm all the way aft? Then what? How is the movement transferred to twin rudders? Does the chain ever need adjustment because of stretch or wear? You guys may think some of m...

Rusty; A great little "how to" thank you. I'm scouring the archives in search of all the pre-purchase information I can find and this is exactly the stuff I'm looking for. An easy thing to check during the initial look see and negotiating process even before surveyors are brought aboard. 2...

Don;
"...the first cable they sent me was magnetic..."

Was there any way of knowing this before hand without putting a magnet to it? In other words no info on packaging or invoice?

Secondly, when you returned it, did the supplier, comprehend the difference?

Thanks.

42 Bridge height

Can someone please tell me the approximate dry weight bridge clearance (no mast) of an early 80s 42 Classic?

Within a foot is fine...water to highest point on the structural bridge.

Here's one sure to stir up some speculation. http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1980/Ocean-Alexander-50-Pilothouse-2676759/Mathews/VA/United-States#.VZ9U8O_bLX4 1980 boat. Trannies replace at, I guess, about 3 or 4 thousand hours. Lehmans rebuilt at 4 and 5 thousand hours. Total on the boat 12,000 hour...

Well J.J. let's see now... Me, 30,000 You, 30k Seems to me that's pretty darned close to the same amount. Also seems like there have been under 3,000 36/42 GBs smacked with a champagne bottle so less than 10% of all Lehmans in GBs sounds reasonable to me. But GBs is not my topic. Old Lehmans is. Eve...

Thanks Bjorn; all good and valid points but... GB is not the only boat running Lehmans. The information I have garnered says some 30,000 Lehmans were produced with probably less than 10% occupying the bowels of a GB. Maybe more like 5%. There are likely more non GBs here on the coast with Lehmans an...

Lehman obsolescence???

I have been trying to find not only some history but also current information on the 120 Lehman and when I read quotes like the following, I wonder at what point they are no longer a wise choice when looking at used boats. From another website: "From everything I have learned from people like B...
