Repower - Lehmans to Cat 3208?

Postby astanley » Tue Sep 04, 2018 3:58 pm

I'm extremely familiar with the Lehmans -- a great motor that is almost bombproof. I know of one that is running like a top at over 10k hours. However, I would prefer to get >10kt out of the boat for some of my longer trips (ME -> NS as an example). From what I have researched, that means going >250hp per engine, provided they can fit within the machinery compartment on the boat. Would love to hear opinions or real-world experiences about going through an repower upgrade on their boat, especially the wood hulls.

For reference, this is for a GB 42' woodie.

Thanks in advance!!

My father has two 210 HP Cats on his 1991 42 Europa, and you can hardly move around them. And his boat is larger than my 1979 42 Europa....
My Lehman are far more comfortable to move around to do routine maintenance.
And parts are cheaper too.
I think than Cats are better fit on 46 or longer boats, because of their size and because of the longer hull...

I assume this is running down hill, heavy wind from the ass end and being homesick........

Stick with an inline 6 be it a cat or a cummins. lots of room to move around and only one exhaust manifold per engine. 3208 is an old engine and i think you would be better off with a nice Deere !!!

I'm guessing he meant 12,500 hrs on the engine and not 12.5 knots.

Bjorn's hours are not unusual for a Lehman that has been well-maintained and properly run. That said, if you are set on a repower, I agree with Jack—stick with an inline 6 to maintain access. Deere is an excellent choice in my opinion.

Correct... that was 12,5k hrs, not 12.5 kts...
