Wheel pulls to left / Prop Walk?

Postby Charlie0 » Tue Aug 07, 2018 4:49 am

So I took delivery of our new (to us) Grand Banks 36 and ran it down to RI from Maine. The Lehman 135 ran extremely well. Very happy with the 225 mile cruise. 1 issue that is troublesome is what I will call prop walk. The helm always has a fairly hard pull to port / left when under way. Does anyone have thoughts on this? Seems like there might have been a fix for this condition. Maybe a wedge on the rudder? It is a left handed wheel. I would think that a left handed wheel would cause just the opposite in theory. It seems to perform well otherwise reaching full RPM. Etc.

I assume it's a single engine.....

Mine does exactly the same thing, pulls to port. I cured mine by fitting auto helm. Before fitting the AH I had a piece of string that went over the screen wash knob and around the wheel handle, that gave me a little time in calm conditions to at least put the kettle on before going off course.

Don't worry about it

Tom, thanks for your input. Yes it is a single Lehman. I thought that the pull was probably inherent but was wondering if there was a known fix.

Would weight distributions play a role? Similar to leaning your weight to port in a dinghy to drift to port and vice versa.

No sure that weight would make a difference as the boat is well trimmed.

A cure for that is to epoxy a small wedge on the rudder, approximately 4" X 4" X 1/2" to 3/4"
Good luck,

Thanks Bob. Port side of the rudder?

The rudder on my boat has a very small wedge but no pull at all ... it will wander gently either way depending on the wind & sea. I don't believe the wedge is much bigger than 2" x 3" x 3/8". It's a bit hard to see but here is a ppic.
