Battery Chargers and Alternators

Postby babybanks » Sat Jul 29, 2017 9:03 am

What does everyone do about having their battery chargers on and running their engines at the same time? I make a point of shutting off the battery charger before I start up my mains but many have told me it doesn't make any difference and they just leave their chargers on.

I don't think it will hurt anything, though I always disconnect the shore power (thereby turning off the charger) before starting the engine.

Battery Charger On Off during Start.

Postby T_BOAT » Sat Jul 29, 2017 12:59 pm

I turn my charger off prior to Start. Charger Techs have told me that a smart charger will see the Start and turn the charging cycle off, but if there is a weak link in the charger, you could do damage. So why take a chance. Once your engine is running now make sure your alternator is putting a charge into the start batteries. I turn back on after shut down and plugged in to shore power.
