Update:

Large Seattle lock to partially reopen Thursday

SEATTLE (AP) — The large lock at the Ballard locks in Seattle is set to reopen Thursday on a limited basis.

The lock has been out of service since an electrical outage caused by Monday's lightning strike.

The Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the Chittenden Locks, plans to open the large lock to vessel traffic twice a day — beginning at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Priority will be given to barges and freighters on scheduled runs, followed by other commercial vessels. Recreational vessels can get on a waiting list for the locks by calling the Lockmaster.

A maintenance crew is still assessing and repairing the large lock to restore it to full service.

The smaller Ballard lock, which mostly handles pleasure boats, continues to operate.

The locks connect Puget Sound and the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

I was on a crab boat in the 80's that had to use the small locks to get into fresh water from Puget Sound. Just visiting, not working. We were the only boat in the locks, and the captain said that he had to use full power to get into the locks....had to displace most of the water in the locks to fit the boat. Then had to use big power to exit the locks too...
