DOCK WALK AT OAK BAY

DOCK WALK AT OAK BAY

Postby GB42-267 » Wed Jun 08, 2011 6:03 pm

Not to stir up old feelings and kick a man while he's down and out, but I came across Ken D's old "Polar Star" while having a sandwich walking the docks at Oak Bay Marina earlier today. All canvassed up but ready to go and apparently in great shape from what I could see:).

Thanks for the photo, Bjorn, she does look good. She was a good one when I got her from Ken, I like to think I made some great improvements when she was in my care (plus I learned to drive a single screw, a talent hard-won and very satisfying); I was very lucky to find an enthusiastic "caretaker" for her, she sailed away in good hands and I'm sure she will be one of the long-term survivors. She's 34 now!

When we move back to the coast in a year or two we will start to look for another GB. I have stayed on this site because I don't want to miss anything as the parting from my lovely Polar Star was forced. Now I'm going to go and get out all the old photos and relive the best times anyone could ever have had... I can almost smell the diesel and see the sheen on the water...

We met Polar Star's new owners in Desolation Sound last year and spoke with them again in Lund when we had to put in with engine trouble.
Nice couple.

She sure brings back a lot of memories for me as well. I still think that is one of the best couple's boats around. Too bad we're just a bit more than a couple. But the day that that condition returns is creeping up on us faster than I like to think.

I hope to see her on the water maybe this summer.

Keep an eye peeled for Prelude, 36 Europa. I understand the new owner kept the name. Last I heard the boat is kept at one of the marinas on the N. end of Saanich Peninsula. Hope she is still well kept.

Polar Star!

Postby dblades » Sat Jun 18, 2011 6:03 pm

Thanks for the pictures and comments! We feel the pressure!

Polar Star is an extraordinarily well-maintained GB 32 and we appreciate those who've put so much love and energy into her. We've added a few items over the past year and a half--new flares, some modifications for storage, etc. She seems to weather the winters fairly well with the covers, but this year we need to paint window frames and, of course, varnish.

Here's a picture of her last summer in Nanaimo habour.

We intend to cruise Puget Sound from mid-July to mid-August--hopefully we'll see you out on the water!

Well, while we're sharing the love for Polar Star (JoMeKe the first) here's a picture of her back in Aug 05 showing the reason(s) we had to move up.

Tom, "what they don't know......" Besides, that's not the least of the embarrassment I've given them...or will give them as they get older and start in with the boys. Just wait! Starting with these two from a 2006 cruise. And I've got much better ones I'm holding in reserve.
